How to Make Your Business Trips Less Horrible

Brilliant, Exciting Careers That Could Be Perfect For You_Chispa MagazineBusiness trips can be great chance to see somewhere new. If you’re lucky, you might have some spare time to explore a city and have some new experiences. The problem is, business trips are often far less exciting than you hope them to be. You spend most of your time working and when you’re not, you end up on your own. And, that’s after you have to go through the misery of getting there. Next time you have to go on a business trip, don’t resign yourself to several days of misery. Use these tips to make everything a bit more pleasant.

Prepare for Comfortable Travel
The worst part of business travel is often the traveling part. Getting from A to B can be a nightmare, especially if you have to travel long distances. No matter what form of transport you’re taking, you can make your journey a little less horrifying. Think about the things you might need to make you more comfortable. If you fly, you might want to take a pillow and a reading light. If you drive, you can try to plan your route and timing, so you don’t get stuck in heavy traffic. Consider all the things that usually bug you about traveling and how you can manage them to make them better.

Make Yourself at Home
Living out of a hotel, even if it’s just for a few days, can feel pretty miserable. You’re confined to one room unless you want to be around other people. You can’t cook for yourself, so you have to eat out (or at least in the hotel) for every meal. Reconsidering your accommodation options could make your trip more pleasant. Talk to whoever is in charge of trip planning to see if they might consider serviced apartments instead. You’ll still have your own space, but you can make yourself more at home. You can cook your own meals, and perhaps invite some colleagues over too.

Enjoy Time Alone
Business trips can be pretty isolating. You might miss your family, and everyone you work with during the day has their own family and friends to spend time with. One of the things you can do is learn to enjoy your time alone. You might not get much chance to bask in your own company when you’re back home. Instead of staying in your hotel room and ordering room service, take yourself out for dinner. Wander around the town and see what it has to offer. You might not be on vacation, but you can still make the most of your free time.

Find People to Socialize With
If you can’t stand to be alone, don’t just wallow in your misery. You have to go out there and find someone to spend some time with. If you’re lucky, you might be on the trip with colleagues or be able to make plans with someone you’re working with. However, if that option isn’t a possibility, you can still find people to talk to. Perhaps find an event to go to or even a social group you can join. You could even just go to a bar or cafe and strike up a conversation with someone.

Your business trips don’t have to be horrible. Take control of your experience and they can be a lot more pleasant and less stressful.
