Improve Your Career Prospects With This Handy Guide

Improve Your Career Prospects With This Handy Guide-Chispa MagazineThe job market is becoming increasingly competitive. You can mark this down to the fact that the world is incredibly overpopulated and that more people are going to university to get degrees. But the fact is, if you are looking for a job in 2015 it’s slim pickings. More often than not, you’re going to have the same skills and knowledge as another person interviewing. It’s effectively going to come down to who the employer likes more and who they think would fit better at their company. But, there are ways to give yourself an advantage and increase your prospects. Here are a few that we recommend.

Build Up Your Experience
While you are looking for a new job, you should be thinking about how you can broaden your experience. This may mean that you take on unpaid jobs in your field or industry. For instance, if you are trying to break into journalism, it’s a good idea to get blogging. One of the first things they ask at a journalism interview is if you blog and how experienced you are with social media. If you can show you have a lot of experience in this area, it might put you ahead of the people that you are competing against. You can do with this with any job from sales to industry.

Improve Your CV
The trick to a good CV or resume is to keep it focused. Don’t write about everything that you have done in your career. Instead, you need to hone in on the job that are applying for. Then rewrite your CV in relation to that specific role. For instance, if you are applying for a job in Law, you don’t want your time working in a theme park on your CV. Although, you may want to mention this in your cover letter or your interview if you can link it into a law career. Generally speaking, your CV should be no more than two pages and some employees prefer one. They will spend sixty seconds looking over it before they decide whether you get an interview or not.

Improve Your Skills
Of course, if you want to improve your chances of getting a job, you should be thinking about how to learn new skills. These skills should be related to a role that you already have knowledge and experience in. You may have worked in manufacturing or an industrial sector. If you want to improve your prospects in this area, you should learn a skill like forklift driving. You can find a reputable forklift training course online. Essentially having a skill like this could get you a job over someone else applying.

Make Yourself Unique
It’s true to say the skill we mentioned above could count here. You need something that no other interviewee can offer. This could be the fact that you are bilingual or multilingual. The world is a melting pot and it is becoming more important to be able to interact with different nationalities in your job. That’s one example of a USP (Unique selling point). You need to have at least one to ensure that you separate yourself from the competition.

Take this advice on board and we are sure your career prospects will be a lot brighter.
