How to Set Up Your Workspace for Greater Productivity

How to Set Up Your Workspace for Greater Productivity-Chispa MagazineA busy woman needs a tidy and inspiring space to work in so she can be more productive. If your desk or office space leaves a lot to be desired, you can do a few things to fix that. The right choices could make your workspace a better place for you to get your work done. Set it up in the right way and you could be more organized, more creative and productive, and less distracted. Everyone works in different ways, but there are a few rules you can follow to make sure you can make the most of your time at your desk.

Get the Lighting Right
The light in your office can make a significant difference to how you work. Not enough light and you might be tempted to drift off to sleep. But too much light could be grating and create the wrong atmosphere for a productive day. Try to get as much natural light as possible, instead of relying on the fluorescence of artificial lights. It will give you softer lighting and help your workspace to look spacious. It can also reduce the strain on your eyes and even get you sleeping better. So try to use only the light you need as much as you can.

Get Rid of Clutter
Too much stuff on your desk is distracting and will stop you working as well. It can be useful to have some things to help you think, but you don’t want the entire surface to be covered. Try to hide things away as much as you can to give yourself more desk space to work on. You can even put your printer away in a cabinet so that it doesn’t have to sit out all the time. Put everything you need within easy reach so that you can quickly grab something whenever you need to.

Stay on Track
It’s easy to get distracted, even when there isn’t much to distract you. And when you have a lot going on, you can end up trying to do five different tasks at once. If you want to ensure that you always know what you’re doing, try keeping schedules and lists. Look at your current calendar, as well as 2016 calendars to put on the wall in front of you so you know what’s going on each day and envision what you want for the new year. Make to-do lists and use task management tools to keep track of your progress on your work. A diary or day planner is useful too.

Inspire Thinking
Sometimes we put too much pressure on ourselves to always do something when we should take some time to sit and think. Thinking is an activity on its own, so you don’t need to be doing something else as you ponder your work. If you need something to inspire you, include artwork or posters around your desk. You can also have a desk toy or stress ball to fiddle with while you’re thinking.

Changing your workspace could make a difference to your productivity. If you want to work more or better, consider your desk before anything else.
