Getting engaged is a big commitment: It says you are both ready to prepare for your marriage… for a future lifetime together. An engagement is an agreement between the two of you to be faithful, and it’s an expression of love and commitment. You might give each other a gift of jewelry that symbolizes the love. Often, couples talk about getting married for a long time before formalizing their relationship. The time you are engaged also gives you a chance to find out more about the legal obligations of your union. You may want to find out how to change your surname, or how to open a joint bank account. Even your passport needs altering if you plan to travel for your honeymoon. You will both need to register your intent to marry legally at your local Register or Government office. There is a ‘cooling off’ period you have to wait for too.

Your engagement could be a busy time for you both. But, more than anything it should also be a happy time, full of hope, and discovery.
