Those Ole’ Blue Jeans

Chispa Magazine

They’re imperfectly perfect. With a few rips here and bleaching there, they fit just as comfy as a glove. We all own a pair, but the question is… What’s wrong with wearing them to church?

Growing up under southern raised Christians, where Sunday’s attire consists of pantyhose, big flashy hats, silk handkerchiefs, and matching pocketbooks, it was the norm for that generation. They usually pass the tradition on to the next but this generation has a new style in mind and I don’t see anything wrong with it. Occasionally, I like to praise my God in a cute, comfortable pair of slacks or jeans rather than an uncomfortable, over-the-top outfit without feeling like I’m being judged by the older saints. Church isn’t a fashion show. We should be comfortable as we give God glory.

As a visitor to other churches where jeans are welcomed, I recognized the spirit of The Lord at an all-time high throughout the whole service. It was a “come as you are” feel that eased everyone fear of being judged for their appearance. By encouraging a physical comfort, that created an open environment to worship.

However, I also understand what elders mean by wearing your best for God, like you would for your peers. Both generations have great points, but it’s all about your preference. And I prefer to worship comfortably.

In what kind of setting do you feel most comfortable to worship in? What influences your view: tradition, culture, personal opinions, or do you just want to be different?

There’s no flaw in wanting to create your own traditions or ways of doing anything for your future family, as long as your heart is pure and intentions are honest, God will always be satisfied.

Tradition is okay and so is a new style. As long as you’re covering up everything that needs to be covered, it’s okay. People may judge and talk about you but you know where your heart lies and you know who’s the real judge at the end of the day. God cares way more about your holiness than your jeans on a Sunday morning. That should all be our main focus, instead of flashy attire. So let ’em talk, Jesus was talked about as well!
