Tips for Building a Business Extension

Tips for Building a Business Extension-Chispa MagazineWhen you want to add a little more space and room to your business location, you could build an extension. But, if you do this, you need to make sure you do it properly.

Pick the Position Carefully
The first thing to think about carefully is where you want the new extension to be located. You don’t want to put it somewhere that makes it hard to use. Or somewhere that makes it unlikely to get the required planning permission. There needs to be plenty of space surrounding the new extension. And you also need to think about the long-term practical considerations. You don’t want to make the functions of the business even more difficult in the future simply because of the new extension.

Get the Ground Inspected
Once you’ve picked a location for the new extension, you need to do some more checks. You should carry out environmental checks to make sure that the ground is suitable. Different locations have different types of soil, and some soils are not good for building on because they can’t support weight well. You don’t want your extension to slide and shift in the future because this could cause significant structural issues with the building. So, order a phase i esa test to get a good idea of what condition the ground is in.

Get Planning Permission
If you go ahead with the work without getting the right planning permission from your local authority, you could get into trouble. If this happens, they could even demand that the building is knocked down and ask you to apply for planning permission before starting the process again. Clearly, this is not something you want to have to go through, so it makes sense to get the right planning permission in the first place. It will save you a lot of time and even more hassle in the long-term.

Hire an Experienced Architect
An architect will be the person who turns your vague ideas into a solid blueprint that can be followed by the builders you eventually hire. This is not a part of the process that you can afford to skimp on. There’s no sense in hiring someone with no experience, who doesn’t really know what they’re doing just because they’re cheap. Arguably, the person who draws up the plans is even more important that the people who eventually turn them into reality. So, hire an experienced architect.

Shop Around for Builder Quotes
Having an extension built is an expensive process, and the most expensive part of that process is the getting the physical work done. This is when you have to hire a team of builders who will be able to carry out the work competently and safely. But, you also need to think about the cost involved. You should never sign a contract with a building firm until you’ve compared and contrasted all the different options out there. Of course, you need a reliable team of builders, but you also need to get value for your money.
