One of the biggest fears for all business owners is falling victim to crime. Given those most companies have something of value, it makes them something of an easy target for theft. You might brush it off and think that your insurance provider has you covered, but it’s not always that simple. In order to make an insurance claim, you’ll need to have gone to proven great lengths to protect your assets.
Many people don’t know what that entails, so we’re here to spell it out for you. Given the myriad of different crimes that you could fall victim to, it’s important to take a lot of different measures. We’re going to need to cover all bases to ensure that you don’t suffer.
Be Aware
First of all, burying your head in the sand isn’t going to get you anywhere. You have to accept and understand that crime happens, and you’re just as much at risk as anybody else. People often think it will never happen to them, but you never know what lies around the corner. You must make a conscious effort to be vigilant at work, especially during peak hours such as opening and closing time.
Limit Door Access
Believe it or not, some criminals are bold as brass. They’ll think nothing of just strolling into your office and helping themselves. Sometimes, this is the best tactic, as people may not think to question something that is too obvious. The front door to your premises should only be accessed by your employees. Give out key fobs, and install an intercom system, so that every entrant needs to be granted permission to gain access. That way, you can monitor and prevent visitors where necessary.
Outsource Your Security
The truth is that many business owners don’t know the best steps to ensure the physical safety of their company. That’s why, sometimes it’s better to leave it in the hands of the professionals. Look to source a commercial contractor that deals with security for a living. They’ve seen it all before, and they know exactly how to handle and prevent things like theft. There are a whole bunch of different security measures you’ll be able to benefit from, from surveillance to door chimes. They will leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of your safety.
Shine A Light
It is believed that the greatest deterrent for criminals is lighting. It’s a simple enough concept. Being surrounded by light increases the chances of getting caught. That’s why most crimes tend to happen during the early hours, long after the sun has set. You should invest heavily in security lighting both inside and outdoors. Your employee parking lot and the front of your premises are both key areas to look at.
Take Safety Precautions
Finally, it should go without saying that somebody on your team needs to be well drilled in health and safety procedure. That elected individual will be responsible for the evacuation procedure should there be some kind of emergency. It’s also worth you having a backup plan in place so that your business doesn’t grind to a halt if it is the victim of a crime.
