From a young age, you have to start aiming in that direction. But it’s easy to waver on that path. To wonder if you’re heading for the right job. The happy answer is: yes. The fact is that all kinds of careers can arise from a chemistry degree. We’ll cover just a few of your options here.

In the lab. Sticking with the obvious answer, you can work in fields of chemistry. Chemical engineering isn’t the only direction to go into, however. If you love working with chemicals and tech like a digital stirrer, there are lots of directions you can go into. For instance, with pharmacology, you can be on the cusp of health care, as important as that is. Or you can use your method as a forensic scientist. There are tons of careers that use your skills directly. Don’t think they all fit one job role definition.

In big data. The scientific method is as important as the specifics when it comes to certain kinds of work. All kinds of businesses are starting to look at the big data that runs like a river beneath the surface. Reading that data and using it to come up with solutions is hugely attractive in the business world right now. With your logical skills, it’s obvious how such businesses could benefit from your presence.

In education. Even if you don’t want a career in the sciences, you have to admit that we have a broader need for more people that do. You can still play a big role in that change. You can engage people in the sciences and create that spark of inspiration to set them down the right path. We always need more people in STEM education. If you want a job that deals with more people, it could be the right one for you.

 

In money. If you can imagine the business need for big data, then just imagine how many people want accountants. Becoming a chartered accountant might take a little more time and work. But you’ll be using many of the skills you use for a chemistry degree, so it shouldn’t be too hard for you. The sciences, data and accountancy all share some of the same basic needs. The needs for research and for the relation between numbers and reality. Chemistry and accountancy are a lot more alike than you might think.

In every other job. Even if none of these options sound particularly attractive to you, don’t worry. There are lots of other jobs that you can take on with your skills. With your numeracy, scientific knowledge, logic skills and everything else. You have skills that employers will clamor for. So don’t give up on that degree just yet. You’ll be employable no matter what.

The skills you are learning or have learned in your chemistry degree are valuable. Don’t abandon them. Take them in whatever field you want and you’ll be sure to find them plenty useful and employable.
