How To Nail Your Next Interview

Thinking About Becoming A Lawyer-Chispa MagazineIf you’re looking for a new job, you’re voluntarily indulging in one of the most stressful activities around. Sometimes, we look for jobs out of necessity. Everyone needs to earn a wage to live. Sometimes we look for jobs because we want to do something new, jobs can get boring quick! Sometimes we look for jobs because we want to get further in our chosen career path and follow dreams. No matter at what, at some stage of our lives we are going to be looking for a job of some sorts. That is just life! And job searching is hard work.

There are two parts to every application that makes up the job hunt. Once you find a job you are suitable for, or an opportunity that you like, you send in your cover letter or resume that makes up part of the application—or in lieu, you fill in an application form. This is part of the screening and candidates that don’t meet certain points, values or criteria as proven by their resume, application form or cover letter won’t be selected for the next part. The most important part of the entire process? That’s the job interview.

The job interview truly is make or break. You’ve got a 50/50 shot of getting the job once you reach the interview, so you’ve got to do everything in your power to convince the interviewing panel you’re worth hiring. To do so, you need to prepare the right way. A job interview without planning is a job interview you likely won’t succeed at. If you’re lucky, the job interview will take place in the distant future, not too soon. It will also be located in the same area as you are—meaning travel will be simple. However, you might not be this lucky. Jobs are all over the world. If you have an interview that is some distance away it might be worth booking into some furnished apartments or into a hotel for the night so you can rest up before your interview and handle traveling on the day prior. Plan your interview well in advance and make yourself on the desired role as well as the company interviewing you.

On the day of the interview? You need to dress for success. Your interview gear depends on the job. Some startups might not like candidates turning up in a suit, but all other careers will. When in total doubt, dress formally unless told otherwise. If your job interview is in another region, fold your suit well and ensure it is crinkle free the following day. Make sure your travel is planned out well so you can arrive early at your interview. Late is a bad look and will ensure you don’t get the job.

To master every interview? Plan. Plan your answers, your questions, your travel, your accommodation (if necessary) and what you will wear well in advance. There’s no guarantees that you’ll succeed, but you’ll give yourself the best chance of doing so.
