Mompreneurs: Are You Managing Your Time Properly?

Moms Prioritize These When Starting a Business-Chispa MagazineAs a mompreneur, you already know how little time you have to get everything done. Not only do you have kids to look after and a business to run. You also have a home to take care of and relationships to maintain. Every second counts, so it’s vital that while you are working on your business that you ensure you save as much time as possible. Here are some tips that can help you manage your time better.

Prioritize everything. You need to put a priority on everything to establish your goals. It will make such a difference when it comes to making the right decision. Split large tasks into smaller chunks to make them more manageable. Allow for extra time to do things, too – you never know when one of the kids is going to interrupt your workflow.

Shut everything out when you are working. There are many distractions in our lives these days. Some of them are unavoidable, of course, your children, for a start. But, the trick is to cut out everything else that is causing you to stop work. Emails and phone calls, for example, are both incredibly time draining. So, switch off your phone and find an anti-distraction app for your PC when you are working on long tasks. You will find you can focus a lot more on your job, and you can reply to any other issues at a later time.

Use technology to cut corners. Administration can take out a huge chunk of anyone’s time. And, when you are a mompreneur trying to run a successful business, it’s incredibly frustrating. After all, when you can spend your time on money-making activities, who wants to stop and fill in some forms or paperwork? Thankfully, there are some options out there that can help you. We’ve already mentioned apps for preventing distractions. But, there are plenty of others that can help you organize your business.

Take Evernote, for example. You can take snaps of your business receipts and keep them in your Evernote monthly accounts file—and it only takes seconds. There’s even contract lifecycle management software that can help you to track vital supplier info. When your business is starting to grow, tools like these will prove their worth. The whole point is to automate all tasks that take valuable time out of your schedule. You’ll get a top-down view of what needs doing, and you’ll be able to concentrate on making more profit.

Outsource. Don’t be afraid to outsource, either. Just because you are a one woman band doesn’t mean you have to do everything yourself. A virtual assistant, for example, can help you with the more mundane office tasks that need doing. Spending too much time researching how to use SEO on your website? Then think about getting a professional in to help. You can’t expect to be able to master every last business task. If you take on too much, you will start to suffer in several ways. Outsourcing is also a lot cheaper than hiring help full time. While finding staff should be a priority when you achieve a certain level of growth, it is unnecessary when you are a small business. Use contractors instead, who you only pay for the work they do—not during quiet periods.

Get help around the house. Whether you’re working from home or an office, make sure you get some help around the house. If your kids are old enough, they should be clearing up after themselves, not leaving it for you. It will free up a lot of your time to concentrate on spending time with the family, or cramming in a last minute business deal.

Take some time out. One of the best things you can do to free up time is to take time out. It sounds counterproductive, of course. But, when you are working at full steam for eighteen hours a day, it’s going to start causing problems. You will find your productivity starts to dip, and you won’t achieve as much as you can. Taking regular breaks away can help refresh the mind and leave you in a much more productive state. So, take some time out and spend it away from your desk whenever you feel it is necessary. Clear your thoughts, spend time with your kids, and have some fun. You will feel all the better for it when you return to your office.
