Helping An Elderly Relative Find A Retirement Home

Helping An Elderly Relative Find A Retirement Home-Chispa MagazineTalking about retirement homes or assisted living is never an easy conversation. However, it’s often the best option when an elderly relative reaches a certain age. It’s usually a safer environment for them to enjoy their golden years. It’s also a more sociable and friendly place for them to spend their time.

However, retirement homes are not all created equal, and it’s not easy choosing the right place. We’ve been through this difficult process before, and we’ll help show you the various options. When you find the right place, your elderly relative will enjoy their time here. And, you’ll feel some peace of mind in their happiness. Let’s take a look, shall we?

General cleanliness. You can tell a lot about a facility from its overall cleanliness. While looking around the home, keep an eye on the floors, the walls, and the facilities. Are they cleaned to a high standard? Is the home kept in good condition? If they’re not, it suggests the staff are overworked, with cleaning falling by the wayside. It also suggests that the care and attention to detail is not present. You’re looking for a place that prides itself on cleanliness.

Staff friendliness. A key part of the facility is ensuring the staff are friendly, caring, and compassionate. Remember, they’ll be looking after your relative’s every need on a daily basis. You’re looking for staff that are bright and caring. A smiling welcome is always a good sign, and you can use your own judgements about the friendliness. You’re looking for a group of staff that love their job, and feel a duty of care.

Activities. On of the best reasons for looking into care homes is to keep your relative busy and active. We recommend trying to visit during a period of activity at the home. That way, you can see how the residents interact with each other. Are they enjoying themselves? Look for a calendar full of interesting events that will keep your relative young at heart! If religion is an important aspect of their life, make sure there are religious activities and facilities.

Food. It’s always a good idea to have a meal at the home itself. After all, your relative will be eating here every single day; it needs to be good! Poor food is another sign of overall lack of care and quality. Again, you can judge for yourself on this one. It’s also a good idea to discuss the options on the menu, and any dietary requirements. You can also learn about the dining times, and find out whether that suits.

Talk to the residents and families. Make sure you ask as many questions as you can to the staff along the way. However, you’ll often find the best information from the residents themselves. Spend some time chatting to the guests and their families. Ask about their experience at the retirement home, and how they enjoy their time there. You’ll get truthful, honest answers every time. It’s also a chance to meet some of the people they’ll be sharing their time with.

At the end of the day, trust your gut instinct when choosing, and don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as your soul desires.
