If you’ve recently got a job that allows you to work from home, or decided to start your own freelancing business, then you may be feeling pretty great about it. I hate to rain on your parade, but if you’ve been indulging in all kinds of fantasies about working at the coffee table in your cushy pajamas, it may be time for a reality check! If you want to be productive and successful at home, you’re going to need a designated home office where you can stay focused on the task at hand. Here are a few good steps for setting it up.
Don’t Mix Work and Pleasure Too Much
I figured I’d start with the most obvious tip; try not to blend work and pleasure too much. Even if you try to make your home office as distinct from the rest of the home as possible, business and leisure are inevitably going to mix a little. After all, you’re at home! A picture of your kids and spouse is fine, but apart from that I recommend removing all possible distractions from your home working environment. If you’ve got a TV in the room, remove it. If there’s any distracting décor, mobile devices or just little piece of junk that you like to fiddle with, keep them far away as well. Perhaps the biggest distraction is going to be right there in front of you: your web browser. In your early days, I recommend getting any materials you need for work together, then turning your computer’s Wi-Fi off or pulling out the Ethernet cable. This will be a helpful reminder if you ever feel like a quick YouTube session in the middle of an important task.
Get Good Back Support
Comfort and back support aren’t usually what people think about when they’re trying to plan out a productive workplace. However, if you’re going to be sitting down for the bulk of your work day, it’s important that you have a healthy level of back support to avoid any back pain and long-term posture problems. These are not only bad for your health, but will also be one more source of distraction which you need to avoid in a home working environment. Set yourself a budget, then check out some reviews on sites like Office Chairs Only.
Simplify Processes
Transitioning from a conventional office job to working at home can be quite the adjustment for a lot of people. If you’re making your home office and the processes necessary for work so complicated that your daily tasks are becoming overwhelming, it may be advisable to take things back to basics. Try to keep your office clean and minimal wherever possible. If you’ve got all kinds of office supplies which you’re always having to tidy and sort out, it’s going to be very easy to procrastinate. You’re not running a full office here, so try to keep supplies as minimal as possible. The same goes for your desktop. If yours is cluttered with music and pictures, create a new account exclusively for working.
