Small Details to Improve Your Living Room

Small Details to Improve Your Living Room-Chispa MagazineAdding charm to our home is so much fun; I can never seem to stop making small adjustments. We might redo a room, and even though it’s technically done, I just can’t leave it alone… There are so many ways that you can put the finishing touches on a room. Each time I think I’ve added the final one, I see something else that I just have to have. This happens all over the house, but one of them that’s easy to keep adding to is our living room. Since we spend a lot of time in there every day, I can’t help but want it to look its best. To add some living-room inspiration to your life, here are some of my top tips for adding small details that make a difference:

Curtains + Blinds
I’m not sure whether window dressings count as a finishing touch, or if they’re an essential part of the decor; I suppose they’re a bit of both. Some people certainly can’t do without something on their windows all the time because their living room looks out onto the street. Typically they choose to use net curtains or maybe some light coloured blinds so that the light can still come through during the day. I think that your blinds or curtains need to look beautiful, though, and not just be practical. Net curtains are a no-no for me – it’s thin blinds all the way.

Cushions +Textiles
One of my favorite things to use for the living room is the humble cushion. You can do so much with them, and they come in so many different shapes and sizes. The best thing is that cushions aren’t just decorative in the living room. They might be in the bedroom, but in the living room you can use them to sit or lean on. I just can’t resist a colourful cushion. And then there are throws and blankets, which are awesome for winter. But it’s not just that; they’re also great for hiding all manner of sins. If you have a sofa or chair on its way out, tossing a large throw over it can save it.

Art + Photos
I don’t like bare walls.. There needs to be something on there, whether it’s a mirror or photographs. A lot of people put up one or two things, but I love the idea of making a feature out of your favourite items. Some people put together an entire wall using the artworks, posters and family photographs that they love best. You can get frames in lots of different shapes, sizes and colors, so it’s fun to play around with them.

Ornaments + Trinkets
Some people like having lots of trinkets and other items around their house. Personally, that’s not for me. I don’t like too much clutter, and it’s not really a good idea when there’s little ones around the house. I don’t want to have to worry about things getting knocked off surfaces all the time. But a few things can add extra detail, especially if they’re out of reach of grabby little hands. A couple of lamps, a vase or even a figurine you like can add some more texture and dimension to a room.
