Six Steps To Being A More Environmentally Aware Homeowner

Six Steps To Being A More Environmentally Aware Homeowner-Chispa MagazineThe environment is on everyone’s mind these days; thankfully we’re becoming a lot more aware of the legacy we leave when it comes to our world. One of our biggest footprints comes from the way we live our everyday lives. There is a lot we can change to benefit the world, and not all of it has to be quite so painful to maintain. The following changes are those you can make to your home that will make remarkably more efficient and eco-friendly.

1)   Banishing the phantom.

Phantom energy is all the energy we lose by keeping power supplied to appliances we’re not using. There are of course, some sources of energy we can’t afford to switch off like fridge-freezers. However, a lot of people lose tremendous amounts of energy simply by leaving their computers and televisions on standby. Cutting out phantom energy is not only good for the environment, but fantastic for your bills.

2)   The right air conditioning.

Air conditioning systems contribute quite a bit of environmental degradation, but for our health and our homes’ safety, we can’t always cut them out of our life. We can; however, take steps to make sure that we’re using the most efficient AC systems we can get our hands on. It’s always a good idea to upgrade your system every few years. The newer ones lose a lot less energy, making them better at cooling your home quicker. Again, also great for the bills.

3)   The power of the sun.

If you live in the right places, solar power can be tremendous source of alternative energy. More and more new builds are starting to incorporate solar panels, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late for older houses, too. Baker Electric Solar is known as one of the best solar companies. Get in contact and see how much it might cost to start doing your part in the fight for alternative energy.

4)   Lighting.

An easy replacement around the home is the kind of bulbs you use. The next time one of your bulbs blow, consider buying a different kind than the usual. Instead, consider using LED bulbs around the home. They are more expensive, certainly. But, shop around and see which will give you the best long-term savings. You’ll have longer lasting bulbs, cheaper bills, and less environmental impact.

5)   Saving water.

Water is another of the finite resources on Earth that we’re starting to understand the depletion of. It’s a good idea to always mind how much water you use. Let your dishes pile until you can get as many done in one wash as possible. Re-use ‘grey water’ if you have plants to feed. Try implementing water saving tech in your bathroom, too.

6)   In the kitchen.

As we’ve said, there are appliances in the kitchen that we can’t afford to shut off. For these appliances, it’s particularly important we choose those that are best at using the energy they’re provided with. A great way to find this out is to look up their energy ratings. Energystar.gov lists most of the available appliances in the everyday kitchen. Consult this whenever you’re buying a fridge or other appliances.
