Burns, Bumps, and Bruises: Home Repairs That Are More Dangerous Than You Think

Essential Tasks to Keep Your Home in Good Condition-Chispa MagazineYou may not realize this, but some of the DIY jobs that most people think are simple can actually be quite dangerous. Even the most basic home repairs should never be attempted without some knowledge of how things work. Some of the jobs we’re about to discuss, you’ve probably already completed in the past. But it doesn’t matter. They are still dangerous, and you have to be aware. You need to avoid them where possible, or at least understand how to approach them safely.

Changing A Lightbulb
I know what you’re thinking. Is changing a lightbulb really all that dangerous? Well, it could be because you might be standing on a chair to reach the light. This in itself may not seem that dangerous. But what if while you’re removing it, someone switches on the power. Suddenly you get electrocuted and fall off, hurting your back. This could lead to quite a nasty injury. That’s why you should always turn the power off to a room at the mains before switching a bulb. Or, make sure that everyone in the home knows what you’re doing.

Repairing The AC
You’ve probably looked at your air conditioning unit and thought that it looks like quite a simple piece of equipment. After all, it’s just a basic metal box on the wall, right? Well, while that might be technically true, AC units are usually filled with nitrogen. If it escapes and gets on your body, it can lead to a horrible frost burn. You’d be surprised how many people end up in ER because they tried to repair their AC. Instead, you should use an AC repair company. They are trained to handle the dangerous chemical that is inside the machine.

Playing With The Water
If you have a plumbing problem, you should try and clean up the water yourself as much as possible. You should do this because if you don’t, it can lead to other issues. You might think that the water will dry naturally and it will. But, it could also soak through the floorboards, leaving damp damage. Eventually, this might lead to more serious structural issues, and it could even attract an infestation.

What you should not do is try and repair the plumbing problem yourself. Particularly if this means releasing water from a pipe or dismantling part of the plumbing in your home. If you do that, you could get burned by boiling water or do more damage to the home. You want to try and avoid both of these scenarios if possible.

Infestation Eradication
Since we mentioned an infestation, you might wonder whether it’s possible to get rid of the bugs by yourself. While it might be possible, it’s not advised for one key reason. If you want to kill an infestation you have to get rid of every single bug. The job needs to be thorough. Otherwise, they’ll just breed and start all over again. It’s worth pointing out that an infestation left untreated in the home can be a health threat, particularly for children.
