What Motivates You To Take A New Job Or Change Your Career?

What Motivates You To Take A New Job Or Change Your Career-Chispa MagazineWe all like to think that we are going to stay in the same jobs or careers for the rest of our working lives, progressing up the ladder so to speak. The truth is; many of us will need to work for different companies in our lives to further our careers.

In some cases, it might even mean moving over to a entirely different career path to the one we’ve selected for ourselves. So, what is it that makes you want to make such drastic career changes?

As you might expect, people swap jobs or even careers for a multitude of reasons. Here are some of the top ones that motivate us enough to have a change of direction:

Your Employer… Stinks
It doesn’t come as much of a shock to learn that people quit their jobs and seek employment elsewhere because of their employers. The sad truth is that many businesses just don’t know how to treat their workers.

When morale among workers is low, no-one is willing to go the extra mile to produce high-quality work. And even if you did, you might not get recognized for your efforts. The thing about employees is they like to know their bosses can see what a brilliant job they are doing.

You might assume that means recognition by getting paid more. But, most people just want a simple “Hey Sharon, you’re doing an excellent job.” Employee reward is crucial to keeping staff happy and content in their jobs. If you don’t get any of that where you are, you know it’s time to perhaps look elsewhere.

Your Salary
Sometimes it just comes down to basic economics. If you feel you are worth more than what you’re getting paid, you might look to work elsewhere if you believe you can get a fairer wage.

It’s no secret that larger companies will pay more money for the right people. So, if you’re working for a small business that just doesn’t have the cash to pay you extra money, that could motivate you to move on.

Flexible Working Hours
When you’re young, free and single, the thought of flexible working hours will seldom enter your mind. Fast-forward a few years when you get married and have kids, and it’s probably the only thing you’re thinking about.

Any parent will tell you that it’s essential you have flexible working hours when you’ve got children. You need time to drop them off and collect them from nursery or school each day. And if there’s no one else to look after them at home until your husband gets home from work, you’ll need to work shorter hours each day.

More businesses are starting to realize the need to offer flexible working hours to their employees. We live in a digital age, so it’s also possible for some people to work remotely from home some of the time.

If you can’t handle a straight 9-5 job because of family commitments, it’s likely you’ll want to work for a firm that offers flexible working hours.
