How to Stay Focused and Meet Deadlines when You Are Self-Employed

If you work in an office, you do get some respite when your working day ends, as you can leave everything behind and forget about work for a few hours. Life is very different, however, if you are self-employed.

For many people, working from home is a dream come true. For anyone who has other responsibilities, it can be very difficult to fit everything in. For example, say you are running your own business from home and trying to study for an MSN in nursing administration at the same time. This won’t be easy, so you are going to have to be ruthlessly organized in order to meet your deadlines. Luckily, RN to MSN online programs from Bradley University are flexible, so you do have some leeway to juggle things around.

Working to deadlines is all part of being self-employed. Clients will expect you to produce work by set times and dates, and you will have other deadlines to meet, such as filing tax returns or sending information off to your accountant. Whatever the reason, deadlines are important, so you need to stay focused.

Some people are able to focus on their work at all times. Others lose focus the moment something interesting catches their eye or their cell phone blips with a social media update. If this sounds like you, here are some tips to help keep you focused on your work so that you are able to hit your targets.

Be Organized
Disorganization is the enemy of productivity. The more disorganized you are, the harder it will be to hit your deadlines. Have a wall planner close to your desk so you can see at a glance exactly what you need to do and when it needs to be completed by. This should help to keep you focused.

Remove Distractions
Kill all distractions or you won’t get anything done. Since social media is a huge distraction, it is sensible to disable social media updates and if you have no self-control, install an app to block social media updates and other internet distractions so you can get your work done on time.

Unplug the Telephone
Telephones are the bane of my life, so I unplug the phone when I need to meet a deadline. Clearly you can’t do this if you are running a business and clients are likely to call, but at least divert calls to answerphone if you are under pressure. If a call is important, the caller will leave a message and you can ring them back later.

Drink Coffee
A strong cup of coffee is great for focusing the mind on an important task. Keep your coffee machine on standby at all times, but be careful not to overdo the coffee or you won’t be able to sleep at night.

It is easier to remain focused if you work in a quiet room, but if this doesn’t work, try listening to classical music in the background to soothe your brain.
