3 Tips for Having a More Balanced Relationship with Your Digital Technology

These days, digital technology is completely ubiquitous. Not only are gadgets like tablets and wearable fitness trackers no longer a novelty, but very nearly everyone carries a smartphone with them at all times of the day and night, that has more processing power than the average computer just a few short years ago.

Of course, there are many amazing benefits to these digital tools and gadgets – but, at the same time, there are a number of downsides as well.

If you find that you are more or less hooked on your devices and struggle to maintain a sense of harmony with regards to your relationship to technology, here are some tips for dealing with your digital devices in a more balanced way.

Utilize apps that are designed to promote responsible use…

Although many apps that exist for modern digital devices can be deeply distracting and can cause issues in and of themselves, other apps and services have been designed specifically in order to help encourage more responsible use of those very devices.

Using a good parental oversight app that offers an easy method to find someone’s phone location can help you to monitor your kids via their devices, in addition to limiting what they do on those devices, for example.

At the same time, apps such as Freedom web blocker can help you to avoid distraction when it’s time to get down to work, or to experience the present moment, free from web-based distraction.

Take regular breaks away from your digital devices, ideally involving time in nature…

Spending a bit of time every now and then using your computer, smartphone, or tablet isn’t likely to radically shift your perspective on the world in a detrimental manner.

If, however, you spend hours and hours on those devices every day, there will inevitably be shifts in your consciousness that you likely won’t even be aware of. Spending more time on social media, for example, has been found by researchers to make people more self conscious.

In order to maintain proper balance, make a point of taking regular breaks away from your digital devices – at least for a few hours a day, and preferably involving time in nature so that you can really get a sense of context once again.

Avoid excessive complexity…

As a general rule, the more complex the apps, services, and devices you use, the more time you have to spend on them just to get anything done.

More than this, however, excess complexity naturally tends to increase stress, anxiety, and frustration.

In order to avoid feeling overwhelmed, and having your attention dragged in a dozen different directions when using your digital devices, opt for the simplest options available that will allow you to do the things you want to do comfortably, and in a fun way.
