Why Do So Many Modern Marriages End?

If you ever take a look at the divorce statistics, it makes for sobering reading. More than half of marriages now end, with couples separating and going their own way. Many go on to find new partners, and the cycle starts all over again.

In this post, we take a look at some of the reasons so many modern marriages end. As you’ll see in the following infographic, many of the reasons aren’t what you’d expect!

Couples actually try quite hard, in general, to save their marriages. Most consider getting a divorce for up to two years beforehand and they are willing to put in about 18 months of work to sort things out. Nearly half of all couples stay together for the sake of their children. They want their marriages to work so that their kids can have a happy and stable home. Nearly 77 percent of couples admit that their divorce affected their children in some way.

So what were the top reasons for divorce? Well, number one, as you might suspect, is infidelity. But most of the following reasons are actually relatively minor issues that tend to have significant emotional consequences. For instance, many couples break up simply because they are no longer communicating with each other. Others say that they argue too much and they couldn’t find a way to stop fighting. For many, it’s wanting different things. So one partner might want to live in the city, while another might want to move to the country.

It can be cold comfort, but knowing facts about divorce, such as asking how long does a divorce take, or how long it takes for people to move on, can help you gain a clearer understanding of your possible decision, or to withdraw from it and try to make the marriage work one last time.
