Maintaining Wooden Floors: Here’s What To Do

Maintaining Wooden Floors-Here's What To Do-Chispa MagazineMy contemporary wooden floors are one of the favorite areas of my home, so I like to go to great lengths to keep them looking great. They play such a big role in the visual appeal of the property, so it’s important to me that they look awesome. The good thing about hardwood floors is that, for the most part, they are incredibly low-maintenance.

However, this doesn’t mean you should neglect them. In fact, quite the opposite is true. You need to make sure you keep up with the maintenance and upkeep of the floors. I love to maintain mine, and keep them looking as awesome as possible. And these are some of the ways I go about doing that.

Sweep
The first thing I do is take a back to basics approach. By this, I mean that I take a broom, and I thoroughly sweep the floor. It’s important to gather up the dirt and dust that collects over time. The good news is that this is much easier to deal with than if you have carpet. I like to give the room a once over and make sure I sweep the whole of the floor. This makes the other steps in the process much simpler.

Hoover
After that I will get out the hoover just to give the floor an extra clean and tidy. This is an important follow-up to the sweeping of the floor. But, I always feel it’s worth being a little more meticulous with the hoovering. For instance, I have wide plank hardwood floors and sometimes dust and dirt can get caught in the gaps. This is where I like to make full use of the vacuum, and make sure I get all the dust and dirt up that I can.

Mop
After doing the hoovering and the sweeping to get the dust and grime off my floor, I then turn to the mop and bucket. Hot water and bleach are the best things to use here. Understand that wooden floors can get mucky and sticky, so it might take some elbow grease to get them clean. This is where the hot water and bleach come in handy.

Sand
Every now and then I would recommend sanding your wooden floors as well. This helps to keep them in good condition and removes the worn outer coat of the wood. By sanding it you make sure that the wood remains sleek and level. This is a huge part of the maintenance process. But, don’t worry; it’s only something you’re going to need to do sporadically. Sanding is an excellent way to keep the floors in great condition, and have them looking as good as new.

These are just a few of the awesome things that I like to do to make sure I keep my wooden floors looking great. Hardwood floors add an amazing visual appeal to any home, as well as being durable. To get the best out of them you need to have a cleaning and maintenance procedure. Ready to apply these tips to your home?
