Traveling Abroad To Study? Here’s What You Need To Know

Traveling Abroad To Study-Chispa MagazineIf you have made plans to study abroad, you are at the beginning of an incredible experience. But, there are some things you should know before your journey begins. A few pointers that will help you when you are attempting to find your way. First, it’s important to realize there are steps you must take before you travel.

Learn The Language
It’s important you know the native language of the country you are studying in. You should be able to speak, write, and understand it to a university level. Many colleges actually expect proof that an international candidate has this ability. You might need to take the IELTS exam. This exam measures your ability to understand and comprehend the English language. But, obviously the exam you take will change depending on the country you are planning to study at. If you can speak the language but you are not fluent, the good news is on average it only takes around three months. After three months in a foreign country, many expats start speaking the language fluently. They learn it before they even realize, and this is common in students as well.

Laws And Customs
When you study in a foreign country, it’s important to understand you do not have immunity. You must obey the laws of the country. It’s also a good idea to understand the different customs and the unique culture. You want to make sure you are acting respectfully. Obviously, for students it’s important to know what the drinking age is. For instance, in America it is 21 while in Britain it’s 18. This is just one example, and you should certainly try to learn everything you can about the country where you will be studying.

Make Friends
Living in a foreign country while studying can be quite lonely. However, the world has become a rather large melting pot. It doesn’t matter what your culture and background are. You will usually find a social group in or near your university set up to cater to it. But, you may also want to join other social groups and experience the new culture, interacting with the community. You should consider making some friends before the school year begins. Typically, you can use social networks a couple months before the school term begins to find others who are going there. You may even find people from your home country who will soon be traveling at the same time as you.

Almost A Vacation
For the most part, you will, of course, be studying. But, remember you won’t be in this country forever so you should make the most of the experience. Perhaps you could travel over there a few weeks before the school term begins. That way, you can get some experience as a tourist before you become a student.

Budgeting
Of course, you will have to make a budget. You are a student after all. The problem is it can be more expensive for international students due to exchange rates. But, if you keep an eye on your spending and don’t spend too many nights out late drinking, you should be just fine.

Our final tip is to remember to enjoy the experience. Remember, these are supposed to be some of the best years of your life!
