When it comes to starting a new career, there is no denying that the Internet has opened up many new job paths for people. One of those is in the field of SEO or “Search Engine Optimization.” SEO refers to the art of improving a website’s onsite and offsite marketing efforts. They get accomplished through various tweaks and strategies.

With over a billion websites in the world, people want their sites to rank the highest in search engine results pages. As an SEO expert, it is your job to make that happen. But, is an online career path one that you should consider?

I will tell you a bit more about what an SEO guru does during the day and what you need to do to become one. A career as an SEO may be the right job opportunity for you.

A Day in the Life of an SEO’er
Search engine optimization is a specialist field. If you do not know what you are doing, you could end up damaging your online reputation. That is why it is so essential that an SEO expert knows about the best industry practices.

A typical day of search engine optimization usually consists of the following tasks:

  • Checking the layout, style and content of a client’s website;
  • Making changes to any website problems;
  • Ensuring each page has relevant but keyword-rich content;
  • Building up links to the site from external websites; and
  • Developing a social media strategy.

As you can tell, there is quite a lot to do when it comes to making an online brand popular. Yes, there might be times where you have to spend some “spare” time doing SEO work. But, the upshot is that you are paid handsomely for your efforts.

So, how do you get a job as an SEO specialist? The thing that some people might not tell you is that the process is not as straightforward as applying for some jobs. Here is what you need to do before you can start calling yourself an SEO guru:

Do Lots of Research Until Your Brain Explodes
Okay, not literally until your brain explodes. But, you know what I mean. Search engine optimization is a vast field and the “rules” surrounding good and bad practices change all the time. It is your job to keep track of those changes and learn about what works and what does not.

The good news is that there are plenty of free resources (i.e. SEO websites) where you can learn the tricks of the trade. You can also enroll yourself in some search engine optimization classes if you would prefer formal training.

Build Up a Track Record
The next thing to do is prove that you are as good as you say. That means setting up one or two websites and applying your SEO techniques to them. You can then demonstrate to prospective digital agency employers that your methods equal successful results.

One of the easiest things to do is set up an affiliate blog. In other words, selling other people’s products via your website. For example, you could set up an automotive blog and link to affiliates that sell cars or auto accessories.

Once you have got the results to prove how good you are, you can then apply for some SEO jobs and show off your talent and new skills.
