Accommodation Options for Contractors Away from Home

Accommodation Options for Contractors Away from Home_Chispa Magazine
As a contractor in your trade, you can end up traveling all over the country, and even all over the world, to do your work. You could be in one place for only a few days, several months or even a couple of years. Finding accommodation that’s appropriate for your stay isn’t always easier. Options set up for short-term visits are usually expensive, whether it’s a hotel or a service apartment. But renting a proper home temporarily isn’t always easy to do. If you need to find short-term accommodation, your options might depend on where you’re going. But often you can choose from hotels, serviced apartments, short contracts in apartment complexes, and more. Consider some of these accommodation types for your next contract away from home.

Hostels and Hotels
If you’re only going to be staying somewhere for a few nights, or perhaps up to a couple of weeks, a hostel or hotel could be your best option. There’s not much need for a more formal arrangement, when you can book a room in the perfect location, with the facilities you need. If you want to save a lot of money, you might consider a private room in a hostel. However, keep in mind they’re not always quiet or conducive to work. But, they can be ideal if you just need a bed at the end of the day. A hotel is better if you need something of higher quality, and you can find budget ones if you need to save money.

Serviced Apartments
For longer stays and when you want more privacy, a serviced apartment or “aparthotel” might be more suitable. You can have your own space while you’re there, with somewhere to cook and relax at the end of the day. It’s convenient if you need to have other people around to work on a project, and someone will come and clean the apartment every couple of days. Depending on how long you stay, and the hotels you usually choose, it could be more or less expensive than hotel accommodation.

Short-term Private Accommodation
If you’re going to be staying in the same place for at least a month, look for short-term contracts on furnished apartment rentals. Many of them will allow you to start a contract from a month and run for up to a year. You can even find apartments that have a host of shared amenities, from games rooms to business centers. You can have a private space, and it’s perfect if you have your family with you too. This option can be ideal for military families or other contractors who often go on longer assignments. The community facilities will help you settle in quicker.

There’s also the option of shared housing, if you don’t want to be alone. But many contractors would rather have their own space to relax after a long day’s work. And, don’t forget to check if the company contracting you will provide somewhere for you to stay.
