What have you overcome? The toughest challenge I have ever overcome was getting the news when my son was 10 days old that he was born with the condition called Craniosynostosis. I was holding him in my arms when the doctor gave me the news and he told me that the only way to help him and fix his condition was that he would have to undergo craniofacial surgery, where they they would have to open his head from ear to ear and remove his skull, cut it up in pieces and kind of put it back together like a crossword puzzle.

The most challenging part besides the fact that you know that he was only 10 days old was the fact that we had to wait until he was nine months old before he could have the surgery because the bones in his skull were not hard enough yet. They were more like cartilage so it was impossible for the doctors to go in there and perform the surgery.

For those nine months every day I would wake up, you know when I would look at my son hoping that he would be okay and that he would be better that he wouldn’t need the surgery and during those nine months I didn’t really understand, you know why this was happening to me, why this was happening to my son and it was really tough because it was the first time in my life that I couldn’t do anything to fix it.

Growing up my parents always taught me if I worked hard I could achieve anything in life that I wanted but in this case it wasn’t true because there was nothing, absolutely nothing I could do. So I decided that my only option was just to love him, to take care of him and since the surgery was you know, life-threatening and very dangerous and very complicated I decided that for those nine months I would solely dedicate to taking care of him and making him happy and making him smile.
