Being Loved by Dee Dee

Better known as Dee Dee Huey by her family and friends is not your average girl. Full of adventure and passion; yes… adventure: she bungee jumped off of Bloukrans Bridge in the Western Cape of South Africa and swam with the shark in Cape Town. Yet, her heart shreds to pieces at the thought of other women, girls, and children being captive due to sex trafficking. She moved to Lesotho, Africa where she served one year as a volunteer for an anti-sex trafficking organization, and later headed to Pennsylvania for another year and dealt with the sex trafficking issues in that area.

What is it about the sex trafficking industry that made you so passionate to stop your life and live to rescue and restore others? So many women are being enslaved, abused, broken and left in such a cruel dark world.  I knew they couldn’t get out on their own. I wanted to do my part, and be a voice for the voiceless.

I had just finished volunteering at Passion 2013 [a conference for 60,000 college-age students from around the globe] where a video was shared of a girl that had come out of sex trafficking. In this video, she shared her story about what she had been through and how Jesus brought her out of a very dark world. Just hearing a five minute clip of her life completely broke me. I knew right then that God was giving me a higher calling. I would be a voice for those who didn’t have a voice. Because I knew God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, I didn’t even think twice if I should follow this calling on my life. When you finally surrender everything and tell the Lord you are willing to lay it all down for him, just be ready for Him to use you.

Exactly 8 months later I moved across the world, to work for Beautiful Dream Society, an organization that is working to end Human Trafficking and minister to vulnerable women and children in Lesotho.  Our work was extremely challenging and rewarding. I had to constantly remind myself that I had to die to myself daily to do this. Luke 9:23-24 says, “And he said unto all, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever would save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.”

I can honestly say I was stretched. I had to constantly remind myself that God doesn’t call us to be comfortable, He doesn’t tell us it will be easy or safe, and I wouldn’t have my life any other way.

During your time in Lesotho, what thoughts would run through your mind when you rested your head on your pillow? How do your thoughts differ now that you’re back in your home city of Atlanta? They are the same because there are so many people throughout the world that are enslaved. Whether it’s America or Lesotho, I still want to be a voice for the voiceless.

What is Dee Dee’s vision, without boundaries, and what legacy do you want to leave established? I want to live my life for others, making a difference by giving hope, restoration, and freedom through Jesus. I want to show women how much they are valued and loved.
