Andrea Ocampo: Sports Reporter, Daughter, Friend + Mentor
What have you overcome? I’ve always struggled with anxiety. I knew this would hinder my work as a sports reporter so I knew I had to address this issue and make sure it wouldn’t dictate my future and what I had to offer. It has always been a matter of setting myself up for success and when it has to do with my anxiety, I’ve always had to go the extra mile to make sure I’m mentally and emotionally ready for the unpredictable nature of my sports reporter job.
My anxiety cost me jobs early in my career but am blessed to have amazing people in my life to help me through my ups and downs. I’m happy to say that my anxiety doesn’t take center stage anymore and although there are moments where it tries to creep in and take over, I don’t allow it to dictate how I perform. It’s something I will always have at the forefront of my mind but with determination and clarity I will always thrive and not let it determine my success.
Endurance is giving me the opportunity to see myself clearly in ways I didn’t see myself before. It has given me perspective and has allowed me to turn a struggle into an opportunity to teach and encourage others to overcome difficulties no matter what. I speak at universities and colleges about defeating adversity. It’s brought me great joy to share my story with others and give them a transparent view on my experiences and use it as a lesson to others. My motto: With Guts and Grace Anything Is Possible!
