How do you handle the business stress of flying solo while creating a digital empire as a makeup artist in a very competitive field? Stress is always there yet I try to leave it for later or for never. If I get too stressed that will make me sick, and I hate wasting time. And yes, it is a very competitive field, which is why you can’t afford holding back for stress. I love what I do and makeup, social media, more specifically beauty videos, help me keep my mind busy, focused, and relaxed.

How does Laura differ from other makeup artists? Every makeup artist has their own style. Me personally, I love Internet looks. Have you seen those crazy makeup photos on Instagram? That is my style: social media. I know, it’s crazy how some of those photos look, or how some of them seem like too much makeup, but I believe it’s an amazing way to show your art, what you know, and love. I know of course I’m not going to have a bride with crazy ombre eyebrows from brown to black, or purple eyelashes and blue lipstick, but that is what I love about social media; you can be as creative as you want to be. It’s like having fashion photo shoots, daily!

What has been your greatest accomplishment(s) within your makeup artistry career? I have been part of amazing and huge projects that I really never imagined happening in my life, or at least not this soon. I have been on television commercials as a makeup artist and as an influencer, I have been on red carpets, worked with amazing artists like Meghan Trainor, [as part of her musical video], traveled to Brazil for a Coca Cola campaign, was part of the talent show, El Artista, as a judge with other amazing and talented influencers, plus being invited to many talk shows to talk. I have won awards like “better use of twitter” in Colombia, “king of the web” internationally and a recognition by YouTube for passing the 100,000 subscribers on my channel. But the greatest accomplishment for me is being able to work in what I really like, not feeling it as a job, but as a passion and proving to my family and myself that you can be a successful artist. Knowing they are really proud of me makes me want to keep pushing to keep going forward.

For someone who is new to makeup, what tips would you provide on enhancing their natural beauty? First of all you have to be happy and comfortable in your own skin and our own body; it’s what you have and it has to be treated with love and respect. If you are not confident with yourself, no matter how much makeup you wear, it’s not going to make you feel or look better. I don’t like telling people how they have to look, I think you can use anything if it makes you happy and makes you feel beautiful.

Besides makeup artistry, do you have any other passions? I love fashion and it’s very connected to makeup, and again, I love how it works inside social media. I also love reading about science.

For you, how much makeup is too much makeup? Too much makeup begins when you start feeling uncomfortable with it, to the point you can’t do basic tasks like blinking, eating or talking; however, I’m referencing to daily makeup of course. Fashion or prosthetics makeup can be a little annoying for the person wearing it.

How do you manage to stay updated and one step ahead of the trends? I make changes on my own to the way I apply makeup or the colors I use; sometimes I have favorite looks or techniques and that is what I concentrate on for a specific season. Then, I get bored and try something new. I also like investigating what is new in fashion around the world and for that, I use my favorite place for research: the Internet. I take the trends and I add my own style to them.

What products best represent you? I’m crazy for packaging so anything with cute cases, I love! I will never have too many brushes or too many eye shadow palettes.

In your current role, what challenges do you encounter most often when working with colleagues, as well as clients? With colleagues: trying to come up with one single idea that everyone agrees with, and because we are talking about art and dealing with different styles this can be complicated, but always possible. When working with clients it’s always a challenge, starting with time, different skin tones and skin types, different opinions, and picturing different results in your head—which is why you have to understand your client—ask them punctual questions that will help identify what they like and what they’re looking for.

What’s next? Your own cosmetics line, books? I have so many ideas of things I would like to do next, and yes I have a book and a cosmetic line on the list. Also, my own talk show, clothing line, DVD, and merchandise, but I like concentrating in the present to have a better future. I agree with having some goals of course, but short term plans work best for me. Those are the ones that lead you to the life goal, maybe not faster, but more successfully.
