How to Make Use of the Ohio Outdoors

Ohio Outdoors-Chispa MagazineDue to the humid, continental climate and stunning landscapes, Ohio is famed for its wild and rustic beauty. However, the Mid-western state is not immune to extreme weather, which is why it’s important to make the most of those rugged hills and forests when we can. From Canoeing to ziplining, Ohio is never short of things to do when the sun comes out—and even when it doesn’t. So, whether you’re a visitor or a lifelong resident, here are five outdoor activities to try.

Freestyle Sports
Freestyle sports are incredibly popular in Ohio due to the views, cliffs and hilly terrain the landscape has to offer. Whether your sport is skiing, snowboarding or scooter riding, you won’t be short on places to hone your skills, either. The Freestyle Bootcamp at Mad River Mountain can help intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders to master difficult maneuvers, while the Ohio Dreams’ Scooter Summer Camp is perfect for keen scooter riders.

However, if you’re heading to Ohio Dreams to practice your scooter skills, make sure you have the right equipment. Blazer provides professional stunt scooters and various other clamps and accessories that will help you expand your bag of tricks. Blazer are also known for producing high-quality scooters without costing too much money. More information about Blazer scooters can be found at Skates.co.uk.

Hiking
If you’re looking to engage in sightseeing as well as exercise, hiking the beautiful Cedar Falls trail is a glorious way to spend the weekend. The trail leading to Cedar Falls passes the most blissful, remote area of Hocking Hills. Surrounded by steep rock walls and waterfalls, it’s not an easy hike—but it remains beautiful and accessible all year-round.

Guided strolls to help you soak up the natural and cultural history of the area take place in the morning, and they’re usually free. A pleasant picnic area and restrooms can be found near to the parking area at the top of the falls.

Zipline Tours
The soaring cliff tops and natural beauty of Ohio are what attracts many thrill-seekers to ziplining in this region, hence why there are so many zipline and canopy tours available. If you fancy a day spent whizzing through the trees, check out Hocking Hills Canopy Tours in Rockridge, or Go Ape Treetop Adventure Course in Strongsville. For animal lovers, there is also the Wild Zipline Safari in Cumberland, which offers a unique opportunity to see camels, deer and rhinos wandering below as you glide through the air.

Race Car Driving
For a NASCAR style drive, keen racers can take part in a Rusty Wallace Racing Experience. There are a number of different “experiences” available from Rusty Wallace and other race car services in Ohio, including dirt racing, open wheel formula driving, Autocross courses and pure speed racing. If you’re a self-confessed adrenaline junkie, race car driving in Ohio is an experience you won’t forget.

Kayaking
For a water-bound adventure, head out for a kayak trip on the Cuyahoga River and soak up the breathtaking views. Burning River Adventures provides guided and self-guided kayaking tours, as well as canoe rentals. If you know your way around the water, you can hire out boats and equipment for the day; otherwise, adventurers can meet at Water Works by the boat launch for a guided tour of the river.
