Switching To Your Dream Job At Forty

Why Women Should Stop Trying to Be Like Men in the Work Place-Chispa MagazineWhen you’re young and ready to enter the adult world, the prospect of a career is exciting it itself. Financial independence and the freedom to buy a house, a car, provide for yourself and a partner… these are all things which appeal to a young mind. Of course, for the majority of people, this frantic rush to get a secure job and provide for themselves or another else they might have look after can often lead to a poor decision; a career that they hate in an industry which never really inspired them. Perhaps this describes you. You’re midway through your career, but you’re in a rut. There’s no way out, though – right?

Wrong. It’s never too late to change your career prospects, whether you’re a bright-eyed young adult who’s just turned twenty or you’ve just turned twice that age. A career is what you make of it, and you’re not going to progress much further onward if you hate your current career. Completely switching your industry to something you love, however, could be just the kick-start you needed. You could take off and achieve far more within a few years in the right career than you would in an entire decade at a company you hate. If you know you want a change but you’ve no idea how to start, here are some golden pieces of advice for those who want to switch to their dream job at forty.

Choose your new path. It’s not enough to know that you want a change. Choosing the first thing which comes your way could send you in the wrong direction all over again. The key is not to look for the best opportunities on the market, but the best opportunities for you. Forget about salary for a second. Think about what you truly want to do. Once you know the answer, don’t doubt your gut instinct. Following the money is always a bad idea, because a decent salary is more likely to come from pursuing a career in which you’re truly motivated and can progress through impressing all the right people in all the right places.

Dust off the CV. The next stage of your journey to the job of your dreams is to dust off that old CV sitting in your desk drawer or on your laptop. Your application is the key part of this process, so you could look into resume templates to ensure you’ve got a professional and aesthetically-pleasing layout. The game has likely changed since you applied for your current career, and you’ve probably gained a lot of additional experience in that time which you might want to add to your CV. Of course, the key is to not overload your application, because relevance is crucial. Stick to the experience which you know this employer will want to see, because they see so many applications that they’re looking for sharp, quick, standout information.

Get your finances in order. Whilst it’d be nice to not worry about money, this is likely the main thing on your mind. Ensure you have a good emergency fund in place whilst you pursue your new career, as there may always be a bumpy patch before things even out. Of course, as I’ve said, it’s all worth to ensure the next 10 years of your career are happy, rather than soul-crushing.
