Being Collectively Creative: How To Throw An Inspirational Work Event

Being Collectively Creative-Chispa MagazineIf you’re fortunate, you work with a group of amazing people. Teams full of creatives produce the best ideas, give the best feedback and—if you’re fortunate—are the best colleagues to be around. But a lot of work events tend to take some of the spark out of the fun. As a boss or an event organizer, you might be wondering if it’s possible to have a really good time if it’s company mandated fun. Here are some creative ideas for your next work event to keep the ideas flowing.

Invite A Keynote Speaker
We’ve all sat around and dutifully taken notes while a keynote speaker has been talking to us about teambuilding or inclusivity, so take care to invite a speaker who is dynamic and who can offer your co-workers a new and interesting way of looking at the world. You could even consider hiring a speaker who isn’t working in the same field as you—no matter what the specific industry is, creativity is creativity, and any keynote speaker who enables your employees to look at themselves and their jobs in a new, inventive way is perfect.

Have Your Event Outside
Beware—this might not work so well this time of year! But if you’re having an event in the summer, consider taking it outside. The fresh air and blue skies will invigorate your employees in a way that spending time in airless conference rooms rarely can. If you want to organize a team sports day, rent bleachers from a company like Rental Bleachers, Inc so your workers can cheer on the competitors and go back to their high school days. Look online for fun games you can play so even the least athletic of the company members can join in.

Make Sure Your Event Has An Aim
It’s almost impossible to make a group of motivated, results-focused people sit through a day of aimless talks and activities. Make sure your whole event has a purpose and there will be a result at the end. For instance, if you work with a group of web developers, give them a strategy and a starting point and see what they come up with by the end of the day. Likewise, if you work with a team of ad creatives or designers, switch up the groups they usually work with and give them fun tasks to exercise their creative spirits. At the end of the day, they can give short presentations demonstrating whatever they’ve come up with.

Ensure Feedback Is Given
There’s nothing as important or vital to the success of a business than a cooperative spirit. Get each person to bring along something they’re struggling with in their day to day job, before writing their problems down and putting them in a hat. (Vet them first to make sure there isn’t anything that could cause problems.) Because everyone in a company has different strengths, facilitate group discussion to work out how these problems can be fixed. You should also ensure that at the end of the day, you ask for feedback from everyone who’s participated, so you know what worked and what didn’t in preparation for the next event.
