Finding the Right Premises for Your Business

Right Office for Mompreneur_Chispa Magazine
Are you a mompreneur looking for your first business premises outside of the home office? Sometimes, we all need a little help in finding the right place for our business. Choosing that first spot is important, and it isn’t an easy task for anybody that is just starting out.

This first step away from the relative safety of the home office is vital for the success of the business.

After all, nobody needs to get tied down to a place that may not suit you or your needs in the future. The right balance is one where the premises suits your business, staff and customers.

A lot of the time this means making sure that you choose somewhere accessible. And this means somewhere near transport links and, if possible, close to suppliers.

First Things First: Specify Your Needs
The first thing you should do, is draw up a list of things that you need from your premises, and what you need to be considering:

  • Size of the building, and access points—is it going to be big enough for what you need, will vehicles be able to gain entry easily.
  • Do you need special structural requirements—loading bays and high ceilings are a few examples of this.
  • Suitable visitor and employee facilities—car parking, suitable entrances and somewhere you can properly greet visitors.
  • Utility availability; gas, electricity, water etc. —basic requirements, but not all buildings on the market will have them.
  • Can customers get to the building easily—is the building near main roads and transport links?

This isn’t an exhaustive list, as there will be many more considerations depending on your business type.

Narrow it Down
If you have managed to draw up a shortlist of properties, but maybe you are having trouble zeroing in on just one. There are ways of making the choice easier.

  • How easy is it going to be to move in equipment and furniture. Do you envisage forcing your equipment in? Maybe a roomier building would be better.
  • Will the premises need a light cleaning, or will you need to call in pest control before you can start doing anything else? Is the effort of the cleanup really going to be worth it?
  • Will any structural repairs need to be done? If too much needs to be fixed maybe that’s a deal breaker.
  • Which premises would be easier to expand upon if needed, or allowed? Hopefully your business will be the roaring success that it deserves to be.

Regardless of which one you settle on, there are still going to be pros and cons. No premises are going to be perfect, but you do need to pick based on your needs tomorrow and not just today. Getting started is the hard part, you just need to stop procrastinating.

Thinking of the future and where you expect your business to be in five years is an important step in the decision making process. Make sure your new venture survives away from the home, and take your time in making your decision. Here’s to your indomitable fighting spirit!
