Sarah Meece: Wife, Mother, Former Educator, Award Recipient of the Milken National Educator of the Year, Author, Speaker, and Motivator.

What have you overcome? Death of my mother when I was only 13: Thankfully I had a family who taught me about Jesus. Divorce: Horrific divorce leaving me as the mother of a three year old son. Attempted Murder: After having attended a high school class reunion, I became reacquainted with my senior prom date. Long story short, we dated for a couple of years and then became engaged. From the moment he slid the ring on my finger, I felt this “gnawing” at my heart telling me I should not marry him. The “gnawing” was God. When I told him I would not marry him, let’s just say, “He didn’t take no too well for an answer!” And, as we all know, revenge is a sad, sad thing!

First, he illegally accessed my email account and sent slanderous emails to my colleagues, friends, and family across the country. Then, he charged over $7000 on my credit card (I had the card, he had stolen my number/identification). He was arrested, but was released on a $25,000 cash bond. But, when he got to his jail cell he told his cell mate, when he was arrested, he was on his way to my house to blow my brains out! Once released, he continued to harass me and was eventually was arrested again–this time his bond was revoked.

My next hurdle was attempted murder. My son and I were leaving for school one morning and we were shot at five times. Word cannot even begin to describe what we went through that day. We never lived another night in our home, and were given the option to go into the Federal Witness Protection Program or to a women’s shelter. I couldn’t do either of those, so we lived with people from our church for over 19 months.

While living with one family, I received a phone call from officials telling me to get out of town ASAP. That evening, after going out of town, I received a phone call telling me that my ex-fiancé’s brother had been arrested for hiring a hit man to kill me. Luckily, the hit man was an FBI agent. But, he told the hit man that I had a 13 year old son and if he got in the way, “just kill him too!”

A couple years after this ordeal, I remarried a man who I call my gift from God. Eight years after our marriage, I was diagnosed with two different kinds of breast cancer. After a bi-lateral mastectomy and chemotherapy, I made the decision to retire. I had always felt God nudging me to speak, but with being an educator, I simply did not have time. Since 2009, I have been traveling speaking trying to encourage and inspire women to overcome the adversities in life. I published a book, A DOSE OF HOPE.
