The Real Value of Education

Chispa Magazine-Higher EducationMany people have a limited view of what is meant by the term education, as most people associate the idea of someone physically attending a college or university in order to learn from lecturers, yet today, education has shifted online with the likes of Udemy hosting courses from niche educators on very specific subjects, or Lynda offering online classes in technology related subjects such as web design and photographic studies.

In fact, today, even the most prestigious colleges and universities are recognizing the power of online learning, and offering courses such as a masters of education online in order to accommodate the need for more flexible and remote learning environments, making education accessible for more people in a more convenient format.  This is particularly good for mature students that have to juggle their work and study commitments.

We all seem to accept the positive benefits of education, but when we look closely at the real value of education we can see that it has very little to do with the piece of paper you get at the end of your academic course.

See, the real value of an academic education is found in its ability to help people bring more value to the marketplace by enhancing their skills and knowledge.

Ultimately, there is no intrinsic value in having a higher education qualification, as we all know there are plenty of people with degrees working in minimum wage jobs, it’s therefore what you do with the education you receive that counts.

The real value of education is linked with its ability to catalyze your intellectual growth, knowledge and understanding of an industry, so you enhance your value proposition to the market.

Unfortunately, many people go to college or university presuming it will automatically lead them to financial security, but the reality is that a higher education qualification does not automatically lead to higher earnings.  Indeed, some of the most wealthy people in the world such as Richard Branson don’t have a college education.

If you’re looking to enhance your earning ability you’ll want to be mindful of the fact people are compensated based on the value they provide.  This means, if you want to earn more then you will need to create more value in terms of the end result you are providing; as the more value you provide the more you will earn.

Furthermore, it should be noted that learning is not limited to academic education.  In many ways, if you want to earn more money you might actually be better off learning how to invest in property, for instance, as financially wealthy people build assets whereas financially poor people earn wages.

It’s interesting that today, you will find many highly educated people attending weekend seminars on topics such as property investing in order to earn more money and escape the rat race, yet somewhat ironically, the seminars are often led by people that didn’t do all that well in school… they just found a way to go out and create value.

In summary, the real value of education is in its ability for you to enhance the value you provide, and whilst academic courses can be helpful there are plenty of other ways to increase the value you have to the marketplace.
