In The Age Of Remote Work, Why Do We Still Move Homes?

It may come as a surprise that only 16% of companies operate fully remotely, but an increasing number of workers say they would be more likely to stay with the same company if they could work remotely. The truth is that companies are choosing to turn a blind eye to the requests of their teams. Why is this happening?

First of all, many businesses want to go back to pre-pandemic normality. They prefer to invest in office-based work environments and struggle to consider remote options as a long-term solution.

Additionally, remote work has encouraged many employees to seek new and better positions in other companies, leading to a phenomenon called the Great Resignation. Forcing employees to head back to the office may aggravate the phenomenon, but companies are keen to try nevertheless.

Lack of trust greatly affects how managers interact with their teams. When a manager needs to monitor employees to ensure the work gets done, remote arrangements tend to disappear.

How do employees react to the loss of remote benefits?

Some employees choose to relocate.

Employees hired during the pandemic could work from anywhere in the country. As a result, some may have lived far away from the business’s physical location. Employees who have built a strong network and valuable connections within the company during the pandemic may be tempted to consider relocation solutions, such as cross country moving against specific conditions:

  • The fees are covered by the employer as it is a change of contract
  • The employer grants paid days off to arrange for the move
  • They have a fully equipped office placement that is provided with the latest technology
  • They receive a pay increase

Others decide to become their own boss.

Not everyone is ready to head back to the office after spending the best part of two years working from home. Office commute? No, thank you. Thankfully, a high number of professionals have utilized their time at home during the pandemic to launch a side hustle. Therefore, they may be in an excellent position to invest their energy in their venture and grow their independent business. After all, why should you work for someone else at the office when you can work for yourself at home?

There is no denying that it is a big jump of faith. However, professionals have learned many skills during the pandemic, including becoming more independent and self-confident.

Building your own business from home also means that you can upgrade your property, such as saving money to move to your dream location.

Look for a hybrid or a remote job.

While only 16% companies offer fully remote positions, it doesn’t mean that the 84% remaining companies are against the idea of remote work. In fact, more and more businesses provide hybrid positions, where they do not necessarily exclude the need to come to the office from time to time. More often than not, hybrid positions are negotiable, and many do not require full-time office presence.

These types of roles are more prevalent among:

  • Marketing
  • IT
  • Design
  • Content creation
  • Sales

Hybrid positions can give employees more flexibility about their locations, as it is not uncommon for hybrid roles to be attached to more than one office. An employee could pick a hybrid role and move to a more convenient location near one of their preferred offices.

After the pandemic encouraged everyone to stay at home, professionals nowadays seek their dream home in a variety of places, whether it is close to their new workplace or in a beautiful landscape.
