Avoiding Disappointing Restaurants

BetterFood_ChispaMagazineThe choice for restaurants these days is enormous. It can be daunting trying to choose somewhere to eat. We are all afraid of trying a new place, only to get there and be disappointed. Too many of us end up eating at the same few restaurants all of the time and missing out on some of the brilliant offerings that are out there. But if you are careful, you can try new places while avoiding disappointment. You just need to spend a bit of time researching the restaurants so you can identify which ones are going to bad without actually eating there. These are a few things to look out for when choosing a new restaurant to try.

The Distance
This is not the most important thing, but it will make a difference. Some exceptional restaurants will be worth making a long journey for, but that is always a risk. You don’t want to drive for an hour, only to get there and be served mediocre food by rude waiters. Don’t limit yourself to restaurants that are just round the corner, but be aware of travelling too far. If a restaurant is located in an inconvenient place, but is still popular, then it is likely to be good because people are willing to travel for it. In built up areas, don’t be fooled into thinking that busy means good. A lot of the time it does, but a poor quality restaurant will still get a lot of passing customers if it is in a good location.

The Website
A good way of gauging whether a restaurant will be good or not is to look at it’s website. This way you can look at the menu and decide if they offer dishes that you will like. You should also pay attention to the pictures of the restaurant itself. Does it look like it has a nice atmosphere? Does the kitchen look like it is fitted out with new equipment from places like Chef Works, or does it look outdated and dirty? The state of the restaurant will be a good reflection of the food itself, if a lot of time and effort is put into the building itself, it is likely that the food will get the same attention.

The Price
Price is going to be another major factor. There will be some restaurants that you simply cannot afford to eat in. But you should also be aware of low prices. If a restaurant is offering a gourmet menu at incredibly low prices, it probably means that they are cutting corners somewhere. It might be with the ingredients themselves, or it might be with staff, meaning that the service will suffer.

Reviews and Recommendations
The best way to be sure about the quality of restaurants these days is to look at reviews. Before the internet, this was much more difficult, but now you can get hundreds of reviews on almost every restaurant out there. Tripadvisor is probably the best place to see restaurant reviews as they monitor reviews to make sure that restaurants aren’t reviewing themselves and ensure all the reviews are reliable. The only downfall is that these people are strangers and might have different tastes to you. Taking recommendations from friends or family who enjoy similar things is also a very useful way of finding restaurants that you will love.

Hopefully these tips will help you to find some new places to eat and avoid ever having a disappointing meal again.
