When moving home there is a ton of different things for you to try and remember, but where are you supposed to start and how do you go about it?
Here, we have five top things for you to remember to help you with your big move.
No. 1: Switch Everything Off
The very first thing you need to do is let all of your utility suppliers know you are moving, including when and where. This is to make sure that everything is connected and switched on for when you get there. Not only that, your current services will be switched off too so that there is one less thing for you to worry about.
No. 2: Get Your Address Changed
This is a pretty big item so it should be done as early and as quickly as you possibly can. There are a lot of people that are going to need your new address; in fact, when you begin to create your list, it will probably surprise on how many make your list. Think of schools, doctors, vets, banks, and pharmacy to name a few.
The list is pretty long, so make sure you go through it carefully to make sure you get everyone. It all sounds like common sense, but you want to make sure there isn’t a single personal letter or bill that goes to your old address, never to be seen by you again.
No. 3: If You Don’t Need It, Don’t Pack It
When it comes time to start packing everything up, take advantage and turn into an opportunity to get rid of all of those things that were creating clutter around your home.
Think about labeling all of your boxes too, so you know which boxes came from which room—this should make unpacking things at the other end much easier later.
No. 4: Plan Ahead for Your Kids and Your Pets
If you are moving with pets or small children, it is best to have them elsewhere while you and your movers, like some Austin movers for example, are lugging heavy boxes around the place. Friends or relatives can be asked to look after either of them for the day.
No. 5: Don’t Forget Insurance
Very often, the last thing on people’s to do list is changing the address of their insurance to make sure the new property is covered. On top of that, make sure the move itself is covered too—even with the best movers in the world, accidents can happen and items can get damaged.
Make sure your new home is going to be covered for when you finally move in, and that your ‘current’ home is still insured before the move is complete.
Before you head out of the door for the final time, verify that you gather up all of your important documentation and personal belongings. Licences, certificates (including birth certificates), photographs, passports… Anything you will need, and will be very hard or impossible to replace.
