The Complete Guide To Renovating Your Old Garage

The Complete Guide To Renovating Your Old Garage-Chispa MagazineA garage can often be neglected by homeowners and there may have been a time when your garage was prime and pristine. But, now it’s full of junk and doesn’t look nice at all. It seems like a bit of a waste to have a garage but not do anything with it. If you’ve got an old garage, here’s our guide to help you restore it back to its glory days.

Check Your Garage Door
A huge part of your garage will be the door. Your garage door is unlike any other door in your house. It will be very big, big enough to lift up and fit a car inside. If you’ve left your garage unattended for a while, the door can get a bit rusty. When it rusts, it means it won’t open and close as well as it used to. The same can be said if you’ve just moved into a house that has a garage. The previous owners may have neglected it, and the door is rusty or broken. Fixing the door problem is the first step to renovating your old garage. It’s no secret that garage door repair is tricky job to do by yourself. So, think about hiring help if you’re struggling to fix your old door. Of course, if you hate the look of your garage door, you can always get an entirely new one fitted. But, I think it makes more sense and costs less to fix one, rather than fork out the money for a new one.

Have A Garage Clear Out
One of the first things you should do is look inside your garage. You may be surprised at how much junk and clutter is in there after all the years. Again, if you’ve inherited an old garage, you may end up with a load of other people’s junk. My top tip is to have a massive garage clear out. Get rid of all the junk and clutter until the garage is completely bare. Even if you find useful things, clear them out, just don’t throw them away. Put them to one side, you want your garage to be spotless. Speaking from experience, it can be helpful to hire a skip if you have a lot of stuff to throw away. It makes things a lot easier for you!

Decide On What You Want To Do With Your Garage
After you’ve cleared everything out, you should be left with a nice bare garage. This is where the fun kicks in, and you can plan what you want to do with it. You could plan on dividing up part of the space for different things. Perhaps you want to turn it into a recreation room or a home office? Provided, of course, that you don’t want to use it to store a car in. If you do want to keep your car in your garage, think about what you’ll do with any other space you have left over. Want to know a little secret? Use the walls! You can hand racks or shelves on the walls for storage. This way, you can keep things in your garage, without having them clutter up the floor.
