The Changes You Need To Make When Moving Into A New Home

Four Tips To Make Selecting Your Next Home Easier-Chispa MagazineMoving into any new home is a big step. It’s even bigger when you realize just choosing the home and putting all your stuff there isn’t enough to truly make it a good home. There are some things you need to start taking care of before you can really enjoy the comfort and safety of a house. Here we recognize some of the potential problems in any new home; not all of them will require immediate action, but they all require your attention at the very least.

Updating the HVAC. HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. When it comes to keeping the home safe from degradation and efficient, there are few things as important. Old HVAC systems will make it more difficult to keep your home cool or hot, leaving you to the mercy of the seasons. It also makes your energy bills rocket up from the fact you need to keep them on longer. Check if you need any insulation on your heating or your vents need a good clean. Newer models tend to be a lot more efficient thanks to the leaps in technology. If you need to look at updating, check out services like KMA Heating.

Check the plumbing. Always take a look at the plumbing and the water mains when you get into a new place. Much like the heating systems, it’s a good idea to insulate the water pipes. No doubt you’ve heard of some of the horror stories a bad winter can bring to the house’s plumbing.

Change the locks. Even if your home has only seen one previous tenant/owner and is in a safe neighborhood, this is an essential step. For one, it ensures you won’t have any nasty surprise visits. They might not all be nefarious, but it’s hard to rest easy knowing that someone outside your circle could have access to your home. You will need the services of a locksmith to fit new locks and give you the keys. You can cut a bit of the cost by buying the replacements yourself, however.

Test all your detectors. Safety is paramount in any home. No doubt you’ve already made the rounds to ensure doors are sturdy and you have enough protection to keep your family safe from outside threats. But, what about those from the inside? Fire detectors, smoke detectors, and monoxide detectors do a huge part in keeping us safe every year. However, that’s only if they’re working. Make sure you check all your detectors to make sure there’s no problem in how they run. You’ll sleep a lot easier for it.

Clean up that basement. A bad basement can the source of a thousand problems. From pest infestations and rising damp to letting all the cold air in the room. A bit of property renovation is always good for you and the value of the home. If you own the home or have permission, take the time to finish the basement. You’ll have one less thing to worry about and more usable space.
