A Small Room Can Still Be Appealing

If you have limited space in your home, it can be a challenge to make everything ‘fit’ and still have enough room to sit with your elbows out. Making the most of what you have has always been the secret to appeal, but how do you apply that to a small room? The living room does not spell glamour to everyone, but that doesn’t mean that it couldn’t use a little love.

The first thing to look at is light—you need more of it. Opening up the space in a room is quick and simple with the right coloring options in your room. From window adornments to the color of your rug, light colors promote the feeling of space.

That said, having your whole home decorated in light colors can actually work against you—what you need to do is have contrast surfaces. For example, make a small living room feel more roomy by painting, or papering the walls with a light color.

By having a darker entryway, the brightness of the living room is accentuated. This can be further enhanced by having light or windowed interior doors.

Let the Light Flow Through Your Windows
If you have curtain rails or rods that extend past the window frames, you are allowing more light into the room. This happens because you are able to move the curtains past the window, removing the obstruction.

Covering up the windows can make the room feel smaller. Blinds, on the other hand, allow you to direct light into the room. Making use of directed light in this way can open a space up.

Organize your Space
You know why women have purses, right? The real reason? It’s because otherwise the bedroom dresser would be full of stuff and would never be clear again. Perhaps not, but the point is, consolidating your things can save space. If you are just moving in, this should be considered sooner than later.

Have your magazines, books CDs and DVDs stored together. Clearing your floor and table tops of clutter is the single most effective way to make space. Even if you don’t manage to actually clear more square footage, the simple act of keeping it clear will make it feel bigger.

Choose Function Over Form
You can create extra space just by looking at your own personal habits. For example, if you have a dining table in the kitchen but you never eat in there, consider getting rid of the table and chairs. Just by moving those, how much space have you reclaimed?

Need more functionality? The key thing to remember about a kitchen space is: it should be as easy as possible to navigate. It’s not just more efficient, it’s safer too. At the same time, you could have glass and utensil hangers installed on the wall under your cupboards. This makes use of space that was previously unused, and frees up space where the glasses and utensils used to live.
