Polytetrafluoroethylene was first discovered in 1938 by a worker, Roy Plunkett, while he worked at the Du Pont company. The discovery was by accident, but since then the material has become one that is widely used throughout the world. From this, we got a material that is extremely resistant to acids, bases, and also solvents, and can commonly be used for floor coatings in industrial areas such as warehouses, among others. When using this material for coating a surface, you will find that there are many benefits when compared to some of the other alternatives that are available.
The Many Uses… Although you may not be aware of it, there are many uses for fluoropolymer coatings in a variety of different industries. Wherever you go in the world, you will most likely see this material and not even notice it. Some of the applications that it is used for are the following:
- Towers
- Bridges
- Roofing
- Wind Turbines
- Floor Coatings
These are just a few of the uses for this material; and if you dig a little deeper, there are many more besides these. One of the reasons this material is so widely used is that it is suitable for many different purposes.
The Benefits…
Weatherproofing: It is common for the material to be used in the construction industry and is used to coat external cladding of buildings. When applied, it forms a protective coating on the outside of the building ensuring that it is completely weatherproof. It not only helps to protect against moisture penetrating the building, but it also offers UV protection which increases the longevity of the materials used.
Almost Limitless Colors: Another factor which makes this material so attractive is that it is available in an almost limitless number of colors. If you require a particular color due to your corporate branding, you can easily get the correct color to match and create not only a hard-wearing surface but also one that looks excellent.
Low Maintenance: When you use a fluoropolymer coating, there is very little maintenance for you to do. The material is extremely durable and can be cleaned easily, and it is also used as an anti-graffiti coating, as paints can be cleaned from the surface removing all signs of the graffiti.
Anti-Corrosive: Another excellent benefit is that the coating is resistant to chemicals; and when you use a suitable primer, it is also resistant to corrosion. These properties mean that the coating is very useful in an industrial, as well as in a manufacturing industry.
Reduced Friction: As well as being durable and hard-wearing, this type of coating can also reduce friction as well as enhance aerodynamics. The reduction in friction means that less torque is required to move heavy objects making it perfect for an industrial setting.
When you use a fluoropolymer coating, no matter what you are covering, you are prolonging the life of the material. Factoring in the low maintenance and other properties, it will help to keep your workplace operating efficiently, as well as creating a safe environment. If your warehouse or place of business requires new flooring, then you may wish to consider this material as a cost-effective solution, and keep the environment safe and functional.
