Energy Efficient Home Improvements That Will Save You A Lot

Energy Efficient Home Improvements That Will Save You A Lot-Chispa MagazineAs the weather is turning a lot colder, you are bound to be using more energy inside your home. How could you not? To make heat, you need to turn on the central heating otherwise you will freeze. Plus, there are all the other little energy guzzlers on top of that, which is costing you a fortune. As you well know, December is one of the most expensive times of the year, so you can’t be paying extortionate energy bills. Good news: there are a couple of ways you can avoid this reality.

Add Insulation
The walls in your home are not always the most efficient. Cavities, as they are also known, are opportunities for the wind to flood into your home, causing a draft. The cold air from the draft then mixes with the warm air in your home and reduces the temperature. No matter what you do, you won’t be able to stay warm unless you tackle the draft. Thankfully, the process is simple. All you have to do is add insulation to the walls to stop both the warm air from escaping and the cold air from entering.

Double Glaze The Windows
Talking about drafts, windows are also a big priority. Along with the wall cavities, they are notorious for letting the air inside houses escape. It tends to happen because lots of windows only use single panels of glass, and they are very flimsy. Again, there is an easy answer: add another panel of glass. Double glazing works as between the two panels there is a vacuum that traps air. So, any air particles trying to leave and enter the home won’t get very far.

Install An Air Conditioner
The thought of an air conditioner might send shivers down your spine because they, apparently, waste a lot of energy. The fact is they don’t waste much energy at all as long as you have the right unit. The best air conditioning units are the ones with the best technology, and this technology saves you much. Efficient heat pumps require up to 80 percent less electricity than alternative electrical heating appliances. And, putting on the air con will also save electricity with the heating because you don’t need to use the boiler as much.

Turn Off The Faucets
It is amazing how much water you will waste on a daily basis. Just think about how many times you turn on the faucets in a day, and how efficient you are with water. Not very efficient, right? Even when you are cleaning your teeth, you may be wasting water as you might not turn off the tap until you are finished. Those extra couple of seconds can waste gallons of water each month.

Turn Off The Lights
Light bulbs are probably the least efficient appliance in the house, so they are the last thing you want to leave running. However, most homeowners do, even when they are not in the room. Simply turn them off when you leave, and you will save a fortune. Alternatively, you could buy energy efficient bulbs instead.
