Creating a nursery for your unborn child is quite the magical experience. It’s a great time for you and your husband to lay down the foundations for your baby’s first days, and also allows you to spend some much-needed time together. Because, believe me, you will appreciate that time you spent with each other when baby arrives. There’s a lot to think about when it comes to designing and creating a nursery—but you don’t have to over-egg the pudding. Here you’ll find tips designed for busy moms and dads who want to do the best for their newborn, but are worried that time issues may impact their creativity.
Plan Well Ahead
You have around eight months to prepare your baby’s nursery, which sounds like a long time. But it will fly by. The earlier you get planning, the easier it will be to create the nursery you have in your mind. Sketch out some ideas onto paper and start having a mooch around home and garden stores. You can take your time—but the closer you get to D-Day, the more pressure you will put on yourself. Ideally, you should have an idea how things are going to look with around four months to go.
The Essentials
Don’t forget about the essentials when you are designing your nursery. There’s a lot of dull stuff that you need to make sure you have done before you can get to the creative stage. Make sure the bedroom is draft-free to protect your little one from the chilly air. Get your windows double glazed to keep the temperature regulated, and the noise out. Also, think about air quality. Hire an air conditioning service to do some maintenance checks so that there are no nasty bacteria flying around. Little lungs can be susceptible to such things, so this is crucial. Finally, you might want to think about fixing any squeaky floorboards. The slightest noise can wake a baby.
Decorating
If you know what sex your baby will be, then you can plan ahead. But as many people like to have a surprise, what is the solution if you just don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl? We all know boys like blue and girls love pretty spaces, but the truth is it doesn’t matter in those early years. Yellows are always good neutral colors to go for—as are light greens. There are also plenty of beautiful gender neutral wall stickers and posters you can buy to decorate the wall. Save Where You Can
The average cost of bringing up a child is almost a quarter of a million dollars. So, while creating your nursery is a beautiful thing to do, don’t feel you have to spend a fortune on it. Don’t be afraid to pick up second-hand decor or furniture. Your little one won’t remember a jot about their first bedroom—and will be very likely to draw and paint all over it in a couple of years time anyway.
